 This church is on aplateau shaped like a cross.
 The annual feast of gishen Mariam is celebrated on 1st October(21stMeskerem)

 Fatuma Roba is the first African woman to win gold in
th marathon.
 Other Olympic Gold medal winners are million wolde,
Gezahagn Abera, and Meseret Defar.
 kenenisa Bekele(broke olmpic record in 5,000 and
10,000 meters in Beijing Olympic -2008).He holds world
records in both the distances.
 Tirunesh Dibaba is the first woman in the world to win
gold in 5,000 and 10,000 meters at a single Olympic
event (Beijing Olympic-2008).
 she holds the current world record in 5000 meters.
 Teki Gelana won the Olympic Gold medal in mararhon
held at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
 Gete wami, sileshi Siheen, Ejigayehu Dibaba, Assefa
Mesgebu, Fita Bayissa, Addis Abebe, Mohammad
kedir, eshetu Tura, Tesfaye Tolla and Tsegaye Kebede
are Olympic medal winners.
 The late yidenekechew Tessema nicknamed as The
Rock of Gibraltor’ is called the father of modern sports
not only in Ethiopia but also in Africa

broken 29 world records in his illustrious career.
 The first man in Africa to win an Olympic Gold medal
was an Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila , who ran barefoot in the marathon in Rome Olympic in 1960.
 He also won Gold Medal in marathon in the following
Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
 Miruts yifter won a double gold medal in the 5000
and 10,000 meters in the same event held at Moscow
Olympic in 1980. He became the first person in the
world to do so

9 reptiles, four fish and 24 amphibians are endemic
(Found only in Ethiopia).
 It is Africa’s leading birding destination.
 There are 20 National Parks, 4 wild life sanctuaries,8
Reserves, and a crocodile and an ostrich farm.
 The largest wild animal reserve is the Babile elephant
Sanctuary.
 It has an area of 6,982 square kilometers and has a
unique species of stunted elephant population.

The almost complete hominid fossil of a baby girl,3 3 million
years old,’ Selam’ was discovered in 2000 by Ethiopian
paleo- anthropologist Dr. Zeraysenay Alemseged un Dikika-
Afar Region
 This belongs to the same species, Australopithecus
Afrensis, as another Ethiopian super star, Lucy( locally
known as’ Dinkenesh’) which is 3 2 million years old
and was found in 1974.
 Unlike Lucy, the three year old baby girl (nicknamed
Selam) has fingers, a foot , a complete torso and most
important of all, a face.
 Dr. Zeraysenay has also discovered fossilized stone
Tools used 3 4 million years making it the oldest in the
world.
 the latest discovery is Ardi, 4 4 millon years old.
 These finds without a doubt classify Ethiopia as
the cradle of mankind

The ‘Danakil Depression ‘ with sulfur fumaroles and lunar
like landscape is one of the lowest place in the world. It is
120 meters below sea level.
 It is one of the hottest ( with temperatures over 50
degrees Celsius) and the most inhospitable place in
the world with many active volcanoes.
 There are salt lakes, smoking volcanic cones, hot
springs and sulfur fields in this region.
 In earlier times the salt tablets known as’ Amole were
used as currency.
