Major traditional musical instruments are the ‘Masinko’-one
stringed, the ‘kerar’-6 stringed. the 10 stringed ‘Begena’-
(harp) used for playing ecclesiastical music and the
‘Washint’(flute). pipes and horns.
 St. yared is considered Ethiopia’s father of music he
lived in Axum in the 6th century AD . He is the author
of cantatas, traditional education and various pieces of
religious literature that has been used by the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church for the past 1.500 years.

Early Ethiopian inscriptions and alphabets in ‘Geez’ have been dated to 5th century B.C.
• ‘Geez’ also known as Ethiopic was used in the 6th century BC.
• ‘Geez’ literature was property established in the region of emperor Ezana in the 4th century.
• The first ‘Geez’ Dictionary was printed in 1638 in Rome.
• ‘Geez’ is still used by Ethiopian Orthodox ‘Tewahedo’ Church in celebrating the divine church services.
• Four major Ethiopian languages come from ‘Geez’, the Latin of Ethiopia.
• The lost biblical book of Enoch is now preserved only in the ‘Geez’ language.
